Bangalore: Parts of Karnataka continued to be tense on Tuesday following large-scale communal violence that erupted on Monday over an article by controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen questioning the tenets of Islam that imposes the purdha system on Muslim women.
The violence was first reported in Shimoga, the hometown of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, on Monday. Nearly 20 vehicles were damaged and the police had to open firing following large-scale looting of shops. Two youths were killed in the firing. The violence soon spread to Hassan, the hometown of former prime minister and JD(U) chief H D Deva Gowda.
Curfew and shoot-at-sight orders have been issued in Shimoga which continued to be tense on Tuesday. Schools and colleges were given a holiday. Bangalore has also been put on high alert.
The controversial translated article, the original of which was penned by Taslima long ago, speaks of the right to impose the burqa system over women and argues that men too should cover themselves from head to toe. The article also has references on Prophet and his wives and argues that the burqa was a symbol pf suppression.
In the the article titled 'Let's Think Again About The Burqa' , Taslima had stated: "If the Quran advises women to use purdah, should they do so? My answer is No. Irrespective of which book says it, which person advises, whoever commands, women should not have purdah. No veil, no chador, no hijab, no burqa, no headscarf. Women should not use any of these things because all these are instruments of disrespect".
The article was published in the Sunday section of Kannada Prabha daily even as nobody is sure why it appeared now and without context. After all the violence, the editor and publisher apologized, but the government slapped cases against the publisher for instigating communal
The paper belongs to the Chennai-based Express Publications (Madurai) Ltd that brings out The New Indian Express.
In Monday's violence, scores of people were injured in incidents of stabbing and large scale stone-throwing.
Soon after violence broke out, the Sri Rama Sene too stepped in and held counter-protests, parades and demonstrations. This led to a spiraling of violence as unruly mobs took to the streets, burnt police vehicles, smashed cars, stoned buildings and looted shops.
Curfew was soon imposed on Shimoga and prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr PC was clamped on Hassan.

In Shimoga, the hometown of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, protesters burnt 12 two wheelers, two tractors, two autorickshaws and pelted stones, police said.
The violence, that left an unspecified number of people injured, started after Holi celebrations earlier in the day, police said.
In Hassan, former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda’s hometown, tension broke out after unidentified persons pelted stones at some commercial establishments during a procession. Some shops were burnt in both places.
Hassan SP Sharat Chandra said the protest was against the article published in the newspaper allegedly offending Muslims. Seven persons have been arrested in connection with the incidents in Hassan, he added.
Additional DGP (Law and Order) A.R. Infant said additional reinforcements have been sent to Shimoga.Prohibitory order is clamped in Bangalore city till 5th March.
The government had extended by one year the visa for Ms. Taslima, who has also moved for permanent residency in India, her ‘adopted’ home after leaving Bangladesh in 1994 in the face of death threats from fundamentalist groups against her writings.
